Caring for your skin following the micro-needling procedure
Micro-needling is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation procedure that helps minimize the signs of aging. To augment the benefits of micro-needling, some have adopted the practice of applying cosmeceuticals prior to micro-needling to enhance its therapeutic effects. When the micro-channels are open, topicals are much more likely to penetrate the dermis.
However, if you use the wrong topical products before, during or after micro-needling, you may do more harm than good so this practice should be approached with caution. Off-the-shelf topicals may contain ingredients that cause inflammation or foreign body responses or hinder the body’s wound healing process. Learn more about microneedling from Crown Aesthetics.
Micro-needling Procedure with SkinPen
The SkinPen micro-needling device causes controlled micro-injuries that stimulate your body’s natural wound healing process. The micro-injuries trigger the release of cytokines and growth factors that lead to remodeling of collagen and elastin. SkinPen creates hundreds of tiny micro-channels in the skin with minimal damage to the epidermis.
While the micro-channels are open in the 24 hours following your micro-needling procedure, it’s particularly important not to use topical skin care products that contain ingredients that will irritate your skin or hinder the skin rejuvenation process. You don’t want potentially irritating ingredients to reach the dermis and prolong inflammation of your skin following the SkinPen procedure.
Before and after micro-needling
Application of topical products prior to, during and after micro-needling can introduce immunogenic particles into the dermis and cause hypersensitivity reactions. In one case study of three women, topical products used during micro-needling produced a foreign body response (facial granulomas). While not fatal, this condition is not pleasant and requires immediate treatment and additional downtime.
All topical products used during and/or after micro-needling should:
- Be formulated for use on broken skin (if used during micro-needling)
- Contain ingredients that won’t instigate inflammatory or foreign body responses
Skinfuse Post Micro-Needling Procedure Protocol
The Skinfuse post-micro-needling protocol was specifically formulated to provide the nutrients your skin needs to optimize the results of the SkinPen micro-needling procedure. In addition to nutrients received from a proper diet, Skinfuse products directly give the skin what it needs to repair itself and restore its natural balance after micro-needling.
Skinfuse delivers those essential nutrients at the right time, without irritating your skin. RESCUE Calming Complex contains several ingredients — sodium hyaluronate, aloe vera powder and niacinamide — that have anti-inflammatory properties to soothe your skin after the SkinPen micro-needling procedure. RESCUE is applied immediately after micro-needling, when the micro-channels are open, and for 48 hours afterward.
RESCUE and the other Skinfuse products don’t contain ingredients that may hinder or reverse the benefits of the SkinPen micro-needling procedure by causing inflammation or delaying wound repair. Skinfuse products are free from:
- Artificial color
- Artificial fragrance
- Sodium lauryl sulphate
- Propylene glycol
- Chemical sunscreen
