Ways micro-needling improves skin

Medical micro-needling is a skin rejuvenation procedure that uses tiny needles to create micro-injuries in your dermis. The needles pierce the skin, creating hundreds of micro-injuries (holes) without significantly damaging the epidermis. The micro-injuries trigger your body’s natural wound healing process resulting in tissue remodeling, including assisting your skin in the natural production of healthy ratios of extracellular matrix (ECM) protein, which include collagen and elastin.

Micro-needling Helps Improves Skin

  • Skin thickness. Micro-needling assists in building the epidermal and dermal thickness. One study found a 40 percent thickening of the epidermis one year after one to four micro-needling procedures.
  • Releases cytokines and growth factors. Micro-needling releases a blood serum and lymph that contains cytokines (proteins that stimulate the movement of cells toward sites of inflammation, infection and trauma), which include growth factors (proteins or hormones that stimulate cell growth). These cytokines stimulate cells to assist in the production of ECM proteins in the dermis and cell proliferation in the epidermis. The result is smoother, healthier and younger-looking skin.
  • Collagen production. In one study, six micro-needling procedures produced a significant increase in collagen. In another study, histologic examination revealed an increase in collagen six months after one to four micro-needling procedures.
  • Improves the appearance of scar tissue in all skin types. One review of 18 studies found that micro-needling, used alone or in combination with other treatments, produced improvements in acne scarring in all 18 studies. In one study of 60 patients with acne scarring, three micro-needling treatments performed at four-week intervals resulted in a 31 percent improvement in skin texture, with no evidence of skin discoloration in any of the skin types studied, including Fitzpatrick skin types 1–6.
  • Improves the appearance of wrinkles. In one study, six micro-needling procedures produced a noticeable improvement in wrinkles. Another study found that two micro-needling sessions reduced the severity grade (i.e., improved the appearance) of upper lip wrinkles in 10 women.

The Benefits of Micro-needling

  • Promotes remodeling of healthy tissue without scarring. The micro-needling procedure does not trigger the pro-inflammatory pathway that leads to the production of scars. Healthy collagen, elastin and other ECM molecules are produced, leading to healthy, balanced tissue.
  • Epidermis. Micro-needling pierces the epidermal carrier, creating minimal damage while initiating the wound healing cascade. It doesn’t remove or thermally damage the epidermal cells, so it can be repeated safely without leading to fibrosis (production of scar tissue) or pigmentation issues. The protective barrier function of the epidermis is restored within 24 to 48 hours after micro-needling, so side effects and downtime are minimal. Slight swelling and redness/pinkness (akin to a mild sunburn) may last two to four days.
