Series: Must-have nutrients for skin remodeling: Copper Peptides
Micro-needling is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation procedure that helps minimize the signs of aging. The SkinPen micro-needling device causes controlled micro-injuries that stimulate your body’s natural wound healing process. The micro-injuries trigger the release of cytokines and growth factors that lead to remodeling of the tissue.
Cell nutrition is very important during the skin remodeling process following the SkinPen micro-needling procedure. Skin remodeling requires energy and nutrients that allow the body to produce ample amounts of collagen and elastin — the scaffolding that gives the dermal tissue its strength and resiliency.
Several nutrients are crucial for skin remodeling and are must-have ingredients in your post-micro-needling skincare: vitamin C, vitamin A and copper peptides. Copper peptides are small fragments of proteins that play an important role in wound healing and skin repair.
Stimulate the production of collagen. Copper is an essential component of some of the enzymes necessary to produce collagen and elastin proteins. Without copper, the body simply can’t produce these proteins in the skin. One study of collagen production found that a copper peptide cream applied to women’s thighs for one month significantly increased collagen production (determined by studying skin biopsy samples). Increased collagen was seen in 70 percent of the women treated with copper peptides compared to 50 percent in women treated with vitamin C cream and 40 percent treated with retinoic acid (vitamin A).
Activate Lysyl oxidase (LOX). The LOX enzyme is required for the maturation of collagen. LOX is responsible for cross-linking collagen and elastin within the extracellular matrix, helping to form the scaffold that supports your skin.
Reduce inflammation. Copper peptides reduce the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokine Interleukin-6 (involved in inflammation and infection responses to wounds).
Several studies have found that topical copper peptides improve skin quality in women. Topical GHK-Cu (a copper peptide) has been shown to:
- Tighten loose skin and improve elasticity
- Improve skin density and firmness
- Reduce fine lines and deep wrinkles
- Improve skin clarity
- Reduce photo-damage and mottled hyperpigmentation
- Strongly increase keratinocyte proliferation
In one study of 67 women aged 50 to 59 with photo-damaged skin, the women applied a GHK-Cu cream twice daily for 12 weeks. The copper peptide cream improved skin laxity, clarity, firmness and appearance; reduced the appearance of fine lines, coarse wrinkles and hyperpigmentation; and increased skin density and thickness.
Several Skinfuse post-micro-needling skincare products contain copper peptides:
- RESCUE Calming Complex is a hydrating gel that soothes and protects the skin and assists in reducing inflammation following the SkinPen micro-needling procedure.
- RECLAIM Hydrating Support provides moisture that’s needed post SkinPen micro-needling.
- FORTIFY Vita C Serum helps to maintain a youthful glow post micro-needling.
