Series: Changes in your skin as you age: The 60s+
The natural skin changes that began in your 30s and 40s—decreased collagen, elastin, skin elasticity, thickness and moisture—continue in later decades. In your 60s and beyond, you may experience dryer, coarser, sagging skin with increased discoloration and wrinkles. Reducing the visible signs of aging is more difficult now when your skin’s metabolism is significantly slower than it used to be. However, there are still steps you can take to improve your skin’s health and appearance.
Changes in your skin in your 60s and beyond:
Skin circulation slows down significantly, resulting in duller, faded skin. Microcirculation—the passage of blood through the capillaries—is less efficient, so fewer nutrients reach your skin.
Collagen and elastin levels and skin elasticity continue declining, causing more wrinkles and sagging skin. Muscles deteriorate, making your facial skin less taut, further contributing to sagging skin.
Benign skin growths appear on your face and body. These growths—known as seborrheic keratoses, actinic keratoses, skin tags and sebaceous hyperplasia—begin as small, rough bumps that thicken and get larger over time. Some are brown while others are flesh-colored. They are bumps, excess skin, enlarged oil glands and growths that protrude from the skin and become impossible to hide with makeup. Skin tags can be removed through freezing or cauterizing.
Challenges to healthy skin:
Post-menopause. Estrogen influences key skin cells, including fibroblasts (produce collagen and elastin), keratinocytes (promote moisture retention) and melanocytes (promote even skin color). Estrogen also holds water in the dermis, making the skin plump. With the extremely low estrogen levels that occur in post-menopausal women, the skin deflates and wrinkles become more prevalent.
Use sunscreen. Keep applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, such as SkinFuse Shield Zinc Oxide 21%, even when it’s cloudy or raining or you’re inside.
Moisturize. Use ultra-hydrating products that are richer in texture and ingredients. Try creams, milks and butters. Apply an oil-rich product (one that has a high percentage of oils) three times per day. When applying moisturizer, massage it into your skin in a circular motion to increase circulation.
- Wash your face only once a day (preferably in the evening) with lukewarm water.
- Replace foamy cleansers or drying gels with a cleansing milk or other cleanser that won’t strip the protective fatty acids from your skin’s surface.
- Use a humidifier if you live in a dry climate.
Stay physically active. Regular moderate-intensity physical activity (such as brisk walking) improves blood circulation, promoting skin health and reducing the risk of heart disease. Aim for 30 minutes of aerobic activity (walking, bicycling, swimming, dancing) at least five days per week.
