How Climate Affects Skin

Whether you live in a place that is cold and dry, hot and humid, or somewhere in between, an area’s climate can wreak havoc on skin. Differences in location can cause everything from acne breakouts to itchy dry patches. Here’s how to protect your skin from the various elements, regardless of where you find yourself.

Cold, Dry Climates

Cold temperatures often accompany low humidity that dries out your skin. Bitterly cold winds can also dehydrate skin. During the winter months, your skin may become rough, red, tight, cracked, or irritated due to dryness.

Some skin conditions may even flare up in dry weather. To head off these issues before they begin, it’s important to avoid hot showers and baths. You should also use a mild face wash, such as Skinfuse® PURIFY, and a daily moisturizer, like Skinfuse RECLAIM, to keep skin hydrated.

Hot, Humid Climates

In warmer climates, high temperatures and humidity lead to sweating. Perspiration can irritate skin and trigger breakouts, especially if you’re prone to oily skin. After you sweat, be sure to wash your face as soon as possible.

Heat can also cause other skin problems, including heat rash, which occurs when sweat ducts get blocked. The trapped moisture under the skin causes a rash to develop. Heat rash usually goes away without intervention after a few days. To protect your skin, make sure to limit your heat and sun exposure as much as possible.

Importance of Sun Protection

Daily sun protection is key regardless of where you live. It’s important to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or greater every day, year-round, even if it’s cold, cloudy, or raining. Skinfuse SHIELD Zinc Oxide 21% is an effective sunblock that protects skin even after microneedling treatments to help maintain results.

We suggest putting your sunscreen on before applying your makeup even if your foundation already contains SPF.  Also, be sure to reapply your sunscreen every two hours if you’re swimming, sweating, or spending a lot of time outdoors.

Changing Climates

While traveling from one climate to another can trigger past or current skin issues, there are some precautionary steps that can prepare your skin before heading out. If you’re going skiing or to a cold weather destination, start moisturizing several days before your trip to hydrate skin cells. If you’re headed to the beach, cleanse and exfoliate your skin to keep your pores clear.

Microneedling is also a great way to make sure your skin looks and feels its best by minimizing facial acne scars. It’s a non-invasive procedure that will help you step out with confidence in any climate. And SkinPen® by Bellus Medical is the first microneedling device cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.1 When used with a post-microneedling protocol like Skinfuse, several SkinPen treatments can help your skin feel great regardless of your location. Find a provider near you today.
